FESTIVAL FEATURE
Behind the Music and Xanuradio attended DEMF/Movement 2007 in Detroit, and Mutek in Montreal.
In addition to some great photos on our website (link), a brief on the festival is below. Here is what a few artists interviewed had to say about their festival experiences.
WORDS SPOKEN BY ARTISTS AT THE DEMF, 2007.
"Hello, My Name Is...."
Michael Mayer on Kompakt
Born: German / Location: Germany
Going to: New York City
"It's my first time at DEMF.  I know the guys who organized the festival and I am quite pleased about what I have seen. It's amazing. I just arrived, and I haven't seen much but what I've seen so far is beautiful. I want to walk around and check out the other stages too. My latest release is a mix cd on kompakt."
Gui Boratto on Kompakt
Born: Brazilian
Going to: Sonar in Barcelona
Comments before his set: "You know, we have parties here in Brazil and there is a law to close the club at a certain hour, but you know, the worst thing I don't like about it is the violence on the streets and the poverty in certain places in Brazil"
JPLS on Minus Records
Born: American
"I am trying to take my set more experimental and play a lot of the sounds from my next two records. I am looking forward to hearing heartthrob play. I always look forward to the festival. It's kind of the same every year. I was at the first year of the festival, So I guess the festival has evolved. My latest release is the twilight album and it's a collection of my tracks which were done over the last 18 months. The tracks have all come together to be put out on Minus on vinyl and on CD and it also includes a track I did with another producer Skoozbot and there is a remix by him and has been very sought after over the last year. Being with Minus here is a lot different than last time when I was here. Then I had put out one record, whereas this year my second record is out, and I am on tour now with Minus.  It's different and it feels much more like a family now. I feel supported."
Going to: Sonar in Barcelona
Linda Bobby aka Magda and Heartthrob on Minus
Born: American / Location: Germany
Going to: Some place fun
Troy Pierce on Minus
Born: American / Location: Germany
Going to: somewhere in Germany
"My favourite part of the festival is the mid-west super day-glow ravers. This year I wanted my set to be here but it's not. I am excited to hear Model 500.  Overall it has been a little rainy and sparse. Compared to other years' the line up seems to be more interesting, more diverse, and there are more things that I would like to hear. The weirdest thing I saw in Detroit was a piercing on a woman at the festival. It was her shirt which was a corset, but the laces that would have gone into hooks on the material went into the hooks pierced through the woman's back.  That was on the first day, on the first hour of the festival that I saw that."
Misstress Barbara on Iturnem, Border Community, etc.
Born: Canadian / Location: Montreal
Going to: (We Forgot to ask, but where is she not going?)
"I thought my set was very distorted but it was good. I haven't played hard in the last year, but tonight I was inspired to do so. It was harder than normal, but no that much, it was cool. People were screaming and I'm tired, so it gave me the right energy to approach my set in the right way... I am looking forward to finishing my album. It's a completely different thing. It's an artist album, and it has songs that have structure with choruses, and it's sung by me! I sing on almost all of the songs. It's a very different direction. It's still electronic music, but it's not about techno, minimal or whatever you want to call it. It's not a certain style - That's not the point. The point is to express what my thoughts are and the way I feel. I Lost my father 5 months ago and after that I think I was inspired to do my album to help with that process of grief. I was questioning what is my outlet going to be? And I was determined to do an album. For me a compilation of tracks is not an album, for me an album is not something that you will necessarily play as a DJ, but the songs tell a story. You know that is my vision of it. My album is going to be something like that. When I lost my father I found myself coming up with things for this album, and that is one of the things he left me."

The tracks on A Thousand Nights sound great. Someone from Partysan Slovenia asked Gregor whether there was an album concept, to which Gregor said, "It's going to be dance album. Every track is going to be deejay-friendly. But it's not going to be Gregor Tresher sound which I established in the last years. It's going to be something more". As Gregor is embarking on an extensive tour for this really great album, Toronto was lucky enough to hear him play at Xanuradio's old Core Studio party.
ARTIST PROFILE:                      ARTHUR OSKAN
He''s a techno music   producer with sounds that are both danceable in a club and pleasant to play   at home. Thankfully, you may be recognizing his name in his most recent remix   work as he takes his sound farther a field.
Arthur plans to do   a lot in the next few months. In his own words, he says, "I've   just finished a remix for Keli Hand on Acacia,   along with EP's submitted for Sean Deason's Matrix  and Alan Oldham's Generator imprints. Next up: Remixes for Mateo Murphy, Derek   Marin and Scan 7."
Here's a brief on one of Toronto's and arguably Canada's best kept techno secrets:
Following collaborations with a number of Toronto's fledgling electronic collectives in the early 90s, Arthur Oskan began a series of live-in-studio recordings under the name Auracle.  These initial works caught the attention of local promoters, and with a   transportable - and primarily analog - studio setup, he began performing at  various downtown parties.
As the decade came   to a close, Oskan introduced a more aggressive edge to his now signature sound. And after a well-deserved hiatus from   playing live, 2001 saw Oskan back on the club circuit, gigging alongside such   notables as AUX 88, Suburban Knight (Underground Resistance) and Alan   Oldham.
In recent years,   his productions (including minimalist tracks under his Myers Briggs   pseudonym) have graced labels such as Restructured, Beretta Grey, Cratesavers Muzik and Third Ear UK.
