Remote Agency moves to Town
By Amanda Connon-Unda, September 2001
Two very important DJs are making their debut to the Montreal Techno scene. If you have not already heard, these two DJs go by the names of Algorithm (Jeff Milligan) and Mike Shannon. Six months ago the two packed their suitcases and relocated from Toronto to Montreal. Being veterans of the Canadian techno music industry, Jeff Milligan started DJing over 12 years ago, and 7 years ago began using his DJ and production alias Algorithm. Similarly Mike Shannon started DJing 10 years ago, and has since made quite the name for him self.
Jeff and Mike began playing locally in Toronto, and shortly afterward during the early to mid 90s went on to tour the Great Lakes circuit through Chicago, Detroit, and Toronto. The two then toured internationally and extensively throughout North America and Europe at acclaimed events in France, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, Austria, Holland, The Czech Republic, and Slovakia. After establishing themselves as acclaimed techno DJs, Jeff Milligan and Mike Shannon involved themselves heavily in other facets of the music industry.
In 1999 Jeff started the Revolver records Canada imprint and he released (among others) catalogue #0005 which featured Montreal production artist Akufen (Marc LeClair) and Algorithm. In addition to Jeffs growing involvement in the music industry, in 1999, Mike Shannon also embarked on his own adventure and founded his record label, Cynosure. Since their inception, their labels have showcased artists and technology that highlights research and experimentation in the new fields of Canadian audio engineering and music production. Revolver and Cynosure have selected works by respected international artists, and they have explored the possibilities of abstract non-linear sound with linear structure and mixing appeal. As the two grew to be close production and business associates as well as friends, both Jeff and Mike have become recognized for their continued work and devotion to the techno music industry and they are now regarded as two of the worlds foremost techno performing artists.
In 2001 the two founded a booking agency called Revolver that they have used as a vehicle to book the artists on their record labels to promoters around the world, generate publicity, and plan tour diaries for their artists. Currently, the two have landed a very popular residency at Stereo Club. Read more to find out what they had to say about their new gig, and where you can find more information on them:
"Things get underway on the 28th of October. The opening night features Mike Shannon, Algorithm and The Mole, so the introductory night in Stereo Bar will be locals night. Colin (Mole) moved to Montreal a few years back from Victoria, BC. Jeff (Algorithm) and Mike Shannon moved to Montreal 6 months ago from Toronto. Colin, Mike and Jeff run three record labels: "next door", "cynosure" (www.techno.ca/cynosure) and "revolver" (www.techno.ca/revolver). Full Mp3 directories and up to date info on the labels are featured on the websites. Thursday's at Stereo will feature label release parties and special guests from Europe and North America. The monthly Friday at Stereo will feature high profile international acts booked through the Remote Agency (www.remoteagency.com). Full info on any artist is available on the site alongside up to date information on all remote agency events around the world."
What are your goals for your weekly and monthly at Stereo?
"We want to feature remarkable original nights for the club with a music program that is rarely offered in Montreal. We have a prolific roster so the acts we arebringing in are high profile and most have never been booked in Montreal. The nights will focus on deep house and techno with a high priority put upon live acts, etc. We are very proud to present our artists on Stereo's sound system which is one of the best we've heard in the world. Stereo will really do the music justice."
What kind of a crowd would you like to attend your event?
"Anyone and everyone. Our artists have cross appeal. The discerning high brow music critic the dance floor enthousiasts."
