Says Magda, "Control is about creating an environment and presenting something that reflects Minus, It's about being able to control every aspect about the event - whether it's lights or the sound, or the music... it's supposed to present a whole experience rather than just going to a regular club. That's what makes it special."
The sound brought in for the event was excellent and the lights were dark except for one red lamp and a starry backdrop. There was the Control banner, the Plastikman logo and opposite it the Hump logo. A brainchild of Camel cigarettes corporation; the Hump had a part in the event. It appears that even events crafted with such control can be affected by the presence of corporate interests. The presence of the logos, the cigarettes, and models on stage sporting Camel paraphernalia and army gear - an ironic combination - caused some attendees to feel put-off by the presence of a company irrelevant to the highly contextual music presented. Under the current conditions and ideological contradictions within the global techno scene, the lines between underground and commercial, as well as past, present and future directions, are not clear.
Toronto techno fans held anticipation for Control party, hosted by Minus, Blue Bookings/Mono, and the Hump, which happened July 30th at the Opera House. Attendees were witness to fantastic DJ sets by techno heavy-weights Richie Hawtin, Magda, Clark Warner, and Greg Gow.
In a non-club venue a lot of work went into creating a fantastic show. Partiers reveled in the sweaty venue with reminiscent excitement not often felt. With a return to the out-of-the-way old rave venue, Control attracted those who knew exactly what they were there to see.
