The fall is long-over, but it was a long and lovely one, wasn't it? This summer, Toronto-based Kick Magazine and associates held a panel series as part of the Beats, Breaks and Culture Festival at Harbourfront Centre. The panels had a range of speakers, and attendees, resulting in interesting conversations ranging from new technologies, to legal issues around sampling, female DJs and sexism felt in the industry and society, as well as topics of high art, genre convergence, and the influence of techno on culture. Full audio (for the audio-philes) and a few photos of these panels can be found at Kick Magazine's Website.
Die Maschine, one of the local techno radio shows on University of Torontos radio station, CIUT (89.5 FM) has seen diversity in its programming. The long-time producer/host (of 4 years), Nick Nelson, took a much deserved break; but two ladies who like techno, Amanda-Connon-Unda and Julia Paonessa, were hosting the show. Now, NIck and Amanda are back to host regularly. You can tune in online via the live stream at www.ciut.fm or listen every Wednesday from 10-11PM on the 89.5 FM radio dial.
Electronica, a music video based show on bpm:tv has a new season and the host, Toronto techno writer Amanda Connon-Unda continues to shoot episodes. You can contact your local digital cable provider to access the channel, and catch the show before the year ends in September 2006. With this great first-time opportunity Amanda is learning all about on-camera work and the nature of the television industry. This fall Amanda interviewed Richie Hawtin at his hotel, during the Guvernment's 9 Year anniversary event.' The interview will be showed in the Spotlight series on bpm:tv this year. Also for Christmas, Amanda introduced an act at FrontTV's industry party, where other tv hosts were present.
What else is cool in this city? A lot - In events, culture, visual art, film, and politics. There's so much to do, and so much has to do with techno - Stretching the lines of techno we can connect the dots between disparate subject matters all feeding back into patterns, rhythms, and the chaotic cycles of life or music, or however you want to look at it.

Arthur Oskan has just signed a deal with a US based record label called Crate Savers owned by the Detroit group Scan 7. Scan 7 has been touring all over the USA, and Europe and they've decided to release Arthur's track on the Crate Savers label. With this coming up it looks like Arthur is going to tour. All of us Torontonians knew that his techno-live PA skills would someday be seen by more people. Arthur Oskan has just released a mix, which can be found here: www.arthuroskan.com
The Vancouver minimal techno duo Jirku-Judge (Robin Judge and Thomas Jirku) released the CD/LP Private Eyes on Onitor Records earlier this year. This CD is great and filled with harmonious rhythms, textures and was crafted elegantly. Apparently the follow up releases titled 'Watching You', and 'Watching Me' are more dancefloor oriented, and there is also a remix album on the way, featuring remixes by fellow B.C. producers Mathew Jonson and Conrad Black (itiswhatitis recordings) coming out this year.
RichieHawtin has released his latest offering, DE:9 Transitions, claiming he is working not only with the tradition X/Y axis but also with Z - the plane of surround sound. What is the shape of sound in 3D? We've seen it in 2-D in the form of waves, but it's such an interesting thing that Hawtin (like others before him) is pushing, and to boot his release has a DVD component and interview clips. All of this sounds quite similar to Jeff Mills' future-thinking DVD release which came out over a year ago. I'd check it out if only to see what other people are talking about! Also, make sure to catch the recent Hawtin videos out on Fusion III distribution which are getting some airplay on bpm:tv, and including one which was nominated at the 2004-5 DancestarUSA dance music awards in Miami. We'll have to wait to see if dance music's notorious (and only?!) award ceremony is held in Miami again in March!
FESTIVALS/EVENTS (Archive)
The MEG festival in Montreal that took place in November sure is something to write home about. Montreal seems to be the Canadian capital for techno festivals, with other greats like Elektra and of course Mutek. This year's MEG line-up proved to be as hype as ever with Tiga, Richie Hawtin, and Akufen and others - notably some very good French and Canadian acts.
This year (we heard from the fantastic Earplug magazine) Mutek Festival has announced their intention to do a Pan-American tour in South America, making events in not 1 or 2 countries (Mexico and Chile) as in year's past, but in several additional cities: Bogota: Colombia, Sao Paulo and Belo Horizonte: Brazil, and Buenos Aires and Rosario: Argentina. The tour is Spanning 13 dates, and features Montreal greats Crackhaus, Akufen, Pheek, Tim Hecker, Vincent Lemieux, Steve Beaupre, Deadbeat, and Monolake's Robert Henke, amongst other talented digital artists from South America.
As usual Toronto has some exciting djs passing through, many who are no strangers to mainstream success. Promoters like Fukhouse are back at Boa Redux nightclub and their next event is Dec. 23rd with M.A.N.D.Y. and James Murphy (DFA soundsystem). Also ADD Events is still throwing events, and their next one is for New Year's Eve. There is also another great event with some of the minimal.ca Djs and Arthur Oskan at a warehouse! As always, more information can be found at message boards, and in our listings on Die Maschine Radio show each Wednesday.
