Greetings, This is the women and techno segment on Modular Systems
My name is Amanda Connon-Unda. I am in second year at McGill Univeristy, and I have previously done several zines about this topic at home in Toronto called The Women oF Techno Project.
I did not know of many female DJs before I started my 'zine series dedicated to female DJs, and women behind the scenes. When I started to look, about 2 years ago, I found many examples of women who are pioneering and breaking barriers of the traditional gender exclusion within this culture. The women I interveiwed for the 'zine series were ambitious and highly motivated individuals who mostly did not want to be identified as "female DJs". But what they all wanted was equality with those DJs who maintain their artistic integrity in the business.
This is Dj Colette's: Sexuality, from the album Our Day, released 2001 on nettwerk records
That was Dj Colette's: Sexuality, from the album Our Day
And now I will play a bit from the interview I did with electro Dj: DJ Mini from Montreal. She has currently released her first CD: Splatter, live mix session, and she can be seen djing at her latest club night called mafia electronique every Thursday at blue dog (3958 St-Laurent). The night also features jordan dare and a team of various electro-techno djs.
I caught up with DJ Mini two weeks ago, and here is what she had to say about her career and her take on feminism philosophy in regards to how that has influenced her career

That was Dj Mini in conversation with me. Now, I'd like to play the first 4 tracks of Dj Mini's Splatter live mix session cd

Here is a favourite electro track "frank sinatra" by miss kitten and the hacker from Tiga's American Gigolo CD released on Turbo and International Gigolo Recordings, followed by the track "1234" by goldenboy and miss Kitten and finally another cool track: by Adult vs. Solvent, the remix of "Flexidisc".

I just wanted to plug Dj Mini's very cool website that has her bio, and gig information: the URL is Djmini.com, and to book dj mini you can email: bookingdjmini@hotmail.com.

While I was in Toronto I organized a roundtable discussion with Dj Chocolate, Dj Freedom, Shara, Miss Tek and Sara Scruton. Here are some excerpts from our chat about Djing, politics, female images in the media, amoung other things
First, another track by Bzrka, a producer, dj and vocalist from NYC. She also has a great website: www.rewlghetto.com/bzrka And the track that follows is On the lift by Bzrka herself.

I think the conversation has spoken for itself
If you would like to contact me please email: womenoftekno@hotmail.com
To sign off, here is a bit of Sara Scruton's 1999 mix cd: "evolvement"

Featuring interviews with: Dj Mini,
Dj Chocolate, Dj Freedom, Sara
Scruton, Miss Tek, and Malika Shara

Through my interviews for this radio segment I was interested to hear several wome's insights about their careers and more about gender issues within the techno music industry. I learned about the nature of the industry more. While it is male-dominated in terms of djing, I learned that there are many many women playing active roles and becoming prominent DJs on various levels.
But first, I thought I would play a track by Dj Colette, who is one of the Djs I originally interviewed for the Women oF techno project. It's not techno per-se, but Colette produces, djs, and does vocals on all of her tracks.
For this segment I interviewed: Dj Mini, and a rountable discussion with DJ Chocolate, Freedom, Shara, Miss Tek, and Sara Scruton in Toronto.
